Why Change SharePoint Address?
SharePoint is an organizational collaboration solution from Microsoft. It very secure and robust and allows users from different organizations to collaborate very easily. But sometimes due to unforeseen reasons we are required to change the SharePoint URL / Link and one of the most common is to make the URL similar to the site name. Hence in this post I have shared all the methods you can use to change SharePoint site URL / Link. Check below.
How to Change SharePoint Online Link / URL
A SharePoint site can be changed in two ways
1. When creating the site
2. And from SharePoint admin settings
Change URL while creating a site
When you navigate to your organization root SharePoint site and choose to create a new SharePoint site. You will get the option to type a url for your site. Check the below image.
To access SharePoint root site for site creation navigate to https://office.com/ > from the left panel choose “SharePoint”.

This method is helpful to shorten your SharePoint site URL. Benefit of short URL is that it will allow you to have more nested folders in SharePoint.
This option is available for SharePoint admin. If you are unable to access then please contact your IT to help.
- Steps to follow
- Navigate to O365 admin center: https://admin.microsoft.com/
- select SharePoint from the left side menu. (See Image 3, 4 and 5 below for instructions)
- Navigate to Active sites and search for the site you want to change URL
- Select the site and it will open the settings for that particular site
- Click on Edit link option to modify the link
After changing the URL make sure to note the new URL as the old one will not work.

Why You Should not Change The Site URL
Although it is very simple and straight forward to change SharePoint Site URL but I do not recommend changing it. There are several reasons why changing a SharePoint URL is not a good approach after is published. But if your site is new and not published yet, then you can change the URL, however below are the reasons why I don’t recommend changing site URL’s
- All your visitors who use the old link will get 404 error (page not found). Hence you need to make sure to provide the new URL to everyone.
- If you have created any applications or flows using Power Automate or Power Apps then they will stop working as well. And they will require changes to function again.
- If your SharePoint is connected to a Teams, then that might stop working as well.
However if you are still willing to change the site URL you can definitely do it but make sure you have the above points in your mind after you change the URL.
